It needs to be ceremonial/temple space…and is referenced to ‘at the mountains of madness’ by H.P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1936, and is catigorized as cythulhu mythos, a framework of names, places and entities that appear in Lovecrafts earlier science fiction tales. There are currently writers who still use the mythos as an expansion to the original world.
Most mythos stories refer to the ‘great old one’s’, a group of ancient, powerful deities who came from outer space, who once ruled the Earth. Wikipedia says…”They are presently quiescent, having fallen into a death-like sleep at some time in the distant past. The best-known of these beings is Cthulhu, who currently lies “dead [but] dreaming” in the submerged city of R’lyeh somewhere in the southeast Pacific Ocean.
